Yellow Stains on Marble? Here’s How to Remove Them Without Etching, Dulling, or Destroying the Stone
Yellow stains on marble are one of the most frustrating problems contractors deal with.
They can appear suddenly (or slowly over time) and completely ruin the look of the installation. Common complaints include:
- Yellow patches near moisture-prone areas
- Discoloration around fixtures or under rugs
- Uneven yellowing on polished marble
- Stains that keep returning after cleaning
And the biggest mistake? Treating marble like ordinary tile. Marble is sensitive. Using the wrong cleaner can permanently damage the finish while barely touching the stain.

Why Marble Develops Yellow Stains
Yellowing on marble is usually caused by contamination below the surface.
Common causes include:
- Moisture absorption
- Organic staining
- Oxidation of embedded materials
- Residue buildup from improper cleaners
- Water infiltration and mineral deposits
Because marble is porous, stains can penetrate deep into the stone.
Over time, they oxidize and become more visible.
In many cases, the stain isn’t just on the surface; it’s inside the marble.
Why Standard Cleaning Doesn’t Work
Most household or general-purpose cleaners:
- Only clean surface dirt
- Don’t penetrate deeply enough
- May react negatively with calcium-based stone
This is especially dangerous with:
- Acidic cleaners
- Vinegar-based products
- Harsh degreasers
- Abrasive scrubbing methods
These approaches often leave the marble:
- Dull
- Etched
- Uneven in appearance
While the stain remains.
What Not to Do
Before attempting stain removal, avoid these common mistakes:
- Don’t use acidic products
Marble reacts to acids and can permanently lose polish. - Don’t scrub aggressively
This damages the finish and spreads contaminants. - Don’t seal over the stain
Sealing traps discoloration inside the stone. - Don’t assume the marble is permanently damaged
Many yellow stains can be extracted successfully with the right process.
The Right Approach: Controlled Oxidation-Based Stain Removal
Yellow stains on marble require:
- A non-acidic solution
- Controlled chemical action
- Deep stain extraction without surface damage
This is where oxidation-based treatment becomes important.
What To Use: Faber OXIDANT
Faber OXIDANT is a water-based stain remover. Its unique formula makes it a definitive, effective solution to:
- Remove yellowing and yellow stains caused by rising humidity or water penetration of surfaces.
- Remove damp stains from materials or dark marks caused by water absorption on natural stone.
- Remove stubborn stains such as nicotine and tannin.
- Remove particularly stubborn colored stains not fully removed by using Faber NO MAC GEL.
- Complete the rust removal stage from marble and lime-based material, removing the purple residue from the extraction action of MAR GEL PLUS.
OXIDANT is a product that can be applied on all surfaces (even the most delicate ones such as polished marbles and acid-sensitive finishes) without changing their original appearance.

BENEFITS
- Water-based
- Gentle on the surface
- Easy application
- Versatile formula
Step-by-Step: Removing Yellow Stains from Marble
Step 1: Surface Preparation
- All surfaces close by that are not to be treated must be protected
- Remove dust and loose residues
- Carefully clean the surface, making sure to remove any dirt present
- Clean the surface gently using a pH-neutral cleaner like Faber Algafloor
- If deep cleaning is called for, use Faber 30 alkaline grease cutter
- If the surface to be treated has been waxed, proceed to remove it with Double Stripping using DEC 21 + FABER 30
- Allow the marble to dry completely
- Never use OXIDANT on wet surfaces; make sure that the surface to be treated is dry or at most, only slightly damp
- Do not apply OXIDANT to overly heated surfaces. We recommend applying the product during the coolest periods of the day
- Before applying the product, it is necessary to make a preliminary test on an unexposed area or unused piece of material to check the product’s suitability
- NOTE: OXIDANT develops active oxygen during use and must only be used alone. NEVER mix it with other chemicals, except for Faber Poultice thickening powder or Faber EXTRACTOR
Step 2: Apply an oxidation-based stain remover
Use a water-based stain remover designed for yellow discoloration on sensitive stone, such as Faber OXIDANT.
- Treat deep stains with Faber OXIDANT liquid mixed with Faber EXTRACTOR
- To treat a vertical surface, mix Faber OXIDANT liquid with Faber EXTRACTOR to create a poultice that more easily sticks to the wall for proper dwell time
- Apply directly to the stained area
- Cover stained area evenly without over-applying
- Do not dilute Faber OXIDANT
Step 3: Allow proper dwell time
- Let the product react fully with the stain
- Oxidation breaks down the discoloration within the pores of the marble
- Stubborn stains such as nicotine and tannin may need from 2 to 8 hours
- Yellow stains caused by rising humidity will need from 8 to 24 hours
- Rust stains will require the combination solution of MAR GEL PLUS + OXIDANT
This step is critical for deep extraction.
Step 4: Remove residue and rinse
- Wipe away remaining product after sufficient time has passed
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
- Dry the surface completely
- Assess the results
Step 5: Repeat if necessary
Older or deeper yellow stains may require multiple treatments.
Each application extracts additional discoloration from the stone.

Why This Method Works
Oxidation-based stain removers target the chemical compounds causing yellow discoloration. They:
- Break down embedded staining agents
- Help lift discoloration from porous marble
- Reduce yellowing without aggressive abrasion or acid damage
Compared to standard cleaners, this approach treats the actual stain and not just the visible surface. For contractors, that means better restoration results with lower risk.
Simple Maintenance Routine
Preventing yellow stains starts with proper stone care.
Routine Cleaning
- Use pH-neutral marble cleaners only like Faber Algafloor
- Avoid acidic or harsh chemicals
Control Moisture
- Dry spills quickly
- Prevent standing water
Monitor Hidden Areas
- Rugs, mats, and fixtures can trap moisture and create discoloration over time
Seal the Marble
- Removing the stain is just half the job, now seal the stone against future stains
- “Lock Out” future yellowing by following up with a quality penetrating sealer to reduce future absorption: use Faber HIDRO 150 or Faber HIDRO SST

FAQS
Q: Can yellow stains be removed from marble completely?
Yes. Many yellow stains can be reduced or fully removed with proper treatment.
Q: Why did the marble turn yellow?
Moisture, oxidation, organic contamination, and trapped residues are common causes.
Q: Is bleach safe for marble?
No. Bleach and harsh chemicals can damage the stone and affect the finish.
Q: Will this damage polished marble?
A properly formulated oxidation-based remover is designed for controlled stain removal on sensitive stone. Always test first.
Q: How many applications are needed?
It depends on the depth and age of the stain. Older stains may require multiple treatments.
Bottom Line
Yellow stains on marble are usually deeper than they appear. If handled incorrectly, the surface can be permanently damaged before the stain is even removed. Using a controlled oxidation-based solution like Faber OXIDANT allows contractors and homeowners to safely break down and extract yellow discoloration, while protecting the integrity and appearance of the marble itself.
